Junior solicitor Arthur Kipps is ordered by his firm to attend senior partner to sort out the affairs of the recently deceased Mrs Alice Drablow.
Delving in to her solitary life, and exploring her remote house he becomes convinced he and his family have been cursed by a mysterious apparition of a young woman with a wasted face, dressed all in black.
Who is the woman in black, and why is she there? Locals refuse to answer his questions, so Arthur must wait until he sees her again, and she slowly reveals her identity to him - and her terrible purpose.
