The History of the Vaudeville Theatre

Initially London's Vaudeville Theatre staged mostly revues. Even after the first permanent theatres were built in London, productions would change on a regular basis. Frequent changes were necessary to keep the patrons returning. The first production to achieve 500 consecutive performances was the comedy Our Boys by H.J. Byron. The show started it's run at the Vaudeville theatre in 1875. The production went on to surpass the 1000 performance mark. This was such a rare phenomenon that London bus conductors approaching the Vaudeville Theatre stop shouted "Our Boys!" instead of "Vaudeville Theatre"
In 1954 the musical Salad Days opened here having transferred from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre and stayed for over 2 thousand performances - the longest running production in the history of the Vaudeville Theatre. Other productions here included Arnold Wesker's Chips With Everything and Willy Russell's Shirley Valentine.
