That's Entertainment At Harrods

Harrods At Night

Mohamed Al Fayed, owner of upmarket department store, Harrods, has come up with an interesting and typically flamboyant way to combat the credit crunch.

Fayed intends to raise a smile from shoppers in this gloomy economic climate by booking West End musicals, the English National Ballet and contestants from BBC's Strictly Come Dancing to perform in his opulent Knightsbridge store.

The performances will come as part of Harrods' "That's Entertainment" marketing campaign. Twenty-minute showcases will be performed by the casts of Avenue Q, Chicago and Mamma Mia! London. On top of this, shoppers will have the opportunity to take part in screen tests, attend beauty workshops and meet actors, Tony Curtis and Eva Mendes.

James McArthur, chief exec of Harrods reportedly said: “It’s all doom and gloom out there. They say retail is theatre: this will be about being fun and entertaining.” Harrods are hoping that by cheering up shoppers they will be encouraged to spend more. If nothing else, a free performance from some of the West End's leading shows will certainly get people through the doors.
