Summer of Love at Shakespeare's Globe
Romeo and Juliet, As you Like It and Troilus and Cressida will be the primary productions at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 2009.
Dubbed Young Hearts, the season will open on the bard's birthday (23 April) and will run through until 10 October 2009. Other major plays include a revival of Dominic Dromgoole's 2007 production of Love's Labour's Lost and a whole host of new work including Frank McGuninnes's adaptation of Euripides' Helen, A New World by Trevor Griffiths and Che Walker's The Frontline.
Dromgoole, artistic director for the Globe said "The 2009 season of Young Hearts celebrates the heedless joy of youth, a love of life and the enduring passion of our audiences."
Young Hearts has been announced after a successful 2008 season which saw more than 330,000 theatre go-ers attend the venue.
Shakespeare's plays need no introduction. Walker's The Frontline will see the stage transformed to mirror modern Camden and Griffith's A New World documents the life and loves of British revolutionary Thomas Paine on the 200th anniversary of his death.
In keeping with the Globe's original principle of open air theatre, touring productions will travel the country throughout the summer, playing The Comedy of Errors and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Romeo and Juliet will kick start the Young Hearts season at the Globe while Love's Labour's Lost closes the season on 10 October. Bookings are being taken from Valentine's Day, 14 February 2009. Keep an eye on Show and Stay® for more news.
