Protests over ACE funding cuts

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Piccadilly Circus earlier this week, furious at the Arts Council England's new funding procedures.

Directors of the Young Vic Genesis led a angry mob of some 200 young theatre directors, actors and producers through the streets of the West End to Piccadilly Circus. The protests come after ACE revealed plans to cut funding completely to almost 200 of its regularly funded organisations, which equates to about a fifth of it's total portfolio.

A statement issued by the group said: "As a community of young theatre makers, we feel betrayed by Arts Council England's procedure in making this year's round of funding cuts." This statement coincided with the 'vote of no confidence' in ACE following a meeting held by actors and other industry figures at the Young Vic recently.

This move is inevitably going to have a major impact on the future of the West End Musical, hopefully it won't be too detrimental. Show and Stay will bring you the latest as and when it happens.
