McDiarmid Performs Despite Heart Scare

sign

Ian McDiarmid performed through a suspected heart attack on the opening night of Six Characters in Search of an Author recently.

The star, perhaps known best for his sinister performance as 'Emperor Palpatine' in the Star Wars films, concealed his dizzy spells and discomfort well enough to earn glowing reviews from the present critics.

McDiarmid was playing the character of 'Father' in the controversial play which explores the limitations of theatre as a story-telling device, the definition of existence itself and the responsibilities of creativity. So controversial was the play when it premiered in Rome in 1921, the author was forced to escape the theatre via a side door to avoid a crowd of furious theatre-goers. The show was later presented in Milan with far greater success.

Following the health scare the next show was cancelled and understudy, Stephen Crane, took over the role for the rest of the week. During his 13 years as artistic director of the Almeida, McDiarmid was responsible for convincing Hollywood stars, Kevin Spacey, Cate Blanchett and Liam Neeson to perform there.

Six Characters in Search of an Author will run until November 2nd at the Gielgud Theatre. McDiamrid is expected to continue in the role despite his health scare.
