Massive Changes Ahead For West End
Theatre chiefs are on the brink of signing a deal that would cause West End theatres to open on Sundays, something practically unheard of in theatreland.
The Society of London Theatre has been investigating the possibility of Sunday opening in order to make the most of the recent surge in popularity of big West End productions, particularly musicals. Management and casts have been in negotiations over the proposed changes for over 16 months.
Previous attempts to begin Sunday opening have been met with staunch opposition. Acting union, Equity, were particularly vocal, they demanded pay rises in exchange for the changes and after their concerns were taken into consideration a new offer was made. This latest proposition sees minimum wages increased to £600 a week in exchange for Sunday performances. Equity have backed the offer and are recommending that its members vote in favour of the changes.
West End casts will finish voting this week. If the offer is accepted a new pay system will be introduced. Minimum rates will increase to £550 per week for performers working in venues with 1,100 seats or more, £500 for those working in 800-1,099 seat theatres and £450 for those working in theatres with a capacity smaller than 800 seats. The pay of stage management staff will also see a marked improvement.
Those who are already paid more than the proposed amounts will have to negotiate suitable pay. Richard Pulford, Chief Executive of the Society of London Theatre, has said that, if accepted, the deal will come into force as soon as possible.
