Royal Haymarket's Marguerite To Close Early

Marguerite

The "credit crunch" has us all tightening our belts at the moment and it seems it's not just consumers that are feeling the pinch. The West End is suffering from the gloomy economic climate just like you or I.

The critically-acclaimed recent addition to the West End, Marguerite, is to close almost two months ahead of schedule. A statement from the show's legendary creative team which includes Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schonberg says, "Both the knock-on effect of the current economic climate, as well as disappointing ticket sales throughout the summer months, have contributed to our decision to close early.”

Directed by Jonathan Kent, Marguerite is the story of a beautiful mistress of a high-ranking Nazi officer, when a young musician half her age falls madly in love with her, her world is ripped apart. The show received glowing reviews from the Daily Mail, the Sunday Telegraph, the Times and the Independent with the Sunday Telegraph going as far as describing the show as "raising the bar for modern musicals".

Marguerite's lead actress, Ruthie Henshall has been lauded for her breathtaking performance as the titular character and it was recently announced that the production would be opening in Tokyo next year.

Marguerite will be replaced at the Theatre Royal Haymarket by a production of The Girl With The Pearl Earring.
