Lee Mead Hangs up his Technicolor Dreamcoat
After a year and a half in the dazzling coat-of-many-colours, Lee Mead has bowed out of the West End version of Joseph for the last time.
A rather monstrously successful run at London's Adelphi Theatre, Lee Mead's 'Joseph' won the young star legions of new fans and showered him with critical accolades. On Saturday (January 10, 2009) however, Lee bowed out of the production for the final time. Before a star-studded auditorium that contained Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and Lee's girlfriend, Denise Van Outen, Lee made his emotional departure from the role that he had made his own.
Lee, from Southend-on-Sea in Essex, won the lead role in the classic musical after taking part in the BBC's talent show Any Dream Will Do. Coming top in the public vote, Lee took the part when the show opened on July 17, 2007.
The role of 'Joseph' will now be performed by Mead's fantastic understudy, Ricky Rojas. In one month's time the hallowed dreamcoat is set to move on again, this time to Gareth Gates, who will don the famous threads from February 9.
