Jason Donovan Crowned Queen of the Desert
Former Neighbours star Jason Donovan is to play one of the leading roles in the upcoming West End stage version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Donovan is to play the character 'Tick' in the musical about a group of drag queens when the show opens in London next March.
The production began its life in Australia as an adaptation of the 1994 Oscar-winning film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, starring Donovan's fellow Neighbours star, Guy Pearce. Donovan described the production as "a wonderful, feel-good production" and declared himself "extremely excited" about his involvement with the musical.
Donovan's character, 'Tick', is a jaded, ageing drag queen who is outed as bi-sexual much to the surprise of his wife and son. The character was played by Hugo Weaving in the film. Tick and her colourful entourage put in spirited performances of some of the best loved tunes of the 60s 70s and 80s on their journey of discovery through the Australian outback. Classics such as 'I will survive' will give the show, a favourite of Australian theatre-goers, a real sparkle come opening night.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group are bringing Priscilla Queen of the Desert to the Palace Theatre and are hoping it replicates its runaway success here in the UK. The delightfully camp musical has been seen by more than a million people in Australia and plans are in place to export it to Toronto, Germany and Sweden.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert opens at the Palace Theatre in March 2009.
