Ian Talbot steps in as Mel Smith leaves Hairspray

Mel Smith has decided to leave the cast of Hairspray and will be replaced by Ian Talbot OBE. Talbot will be taking on the role of Wilber Turnblad from the 28th January 2008 at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End.

Mel Smith's last performance will be on the 26th January and he will exit after first playing the role of Wilbur in October 2007. Ian Talbot brings a wealth of West End experience to the part as well as notable TV roles including credits in As Time Goes By, Midsomer Murders and Heartbeat,

Ian Talbot is the former artistic director for Regent's Park Open Air Theatre and was recently awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List. He will join the cast of MIchael Ball, Ben James Ellis and Leanne Jones who will all continue in their respective roles until October 25th 2008.
