Today's the Day the Cast of Hairspray Changes!
It's been on the cards for nigh on two months now, but tonight the multi-award winning West End hit Hairspray welcomes two new cast members.
Playing alongside Michael Ball's fantastically popular 'Edna Turnblad', Liz Robertson will be taking over as 'Velma Von Tussle' and Raquel Jones will be performing the role of 'Little Inez'.
Taking the torch from Tracie Bennet, the experienced Robertson will debut as the scheming Velma at the Shaftesbury Theatre in tonight's performance. Robertson, who has performed in West End runs of My Fair Lady, and The Phantom of the Opera is certain to enrich the production with her unparalleled theatrical credentials and effortless charm.
Tonight's performance also marks the beginning of 16-year-old Raquel Jones's first major West End role. Taking over from the much acclaimed Natlie Best, Jones will play 'Little Inez', an ambitious black teenager determined to overturn the racial prejudices of her segregated society.
An energetic and highly camp fling through the social politics of a Baltimore community in the early 1960s, Hairspray has been delighting audiences in both the West End and on Broadway since it opened in America six years ago. Aided by an electric performance by West End legend Michael Ball, this musical really is one not to be missed.
