Hairspray Pick Up More Awards
Hairspray added to its already massive collection of awards last night (17 November 2008) and scooped the Musical Theatre prize at the 56th annual Variety Club Showbusiness Awards.
The West End production of the show has now collected 28 awards in total, including an Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2008.
Hairspray has been playing to sell out crowds at the Shaftesbury Theatre since 30 October 2007 where it is still running today.
The show, directed by Jack O'Brien, is based on the cult 80s film of the same name and tells the story of pleasantly plump Tracy Turnbald and her quest to fit in with her teenage peers. Originally adapted for Broadway, Hairspray has been a huge success on both sides of the water.
The other main theatre accolade at the awards ceremony, Best Stage Performance, went to Kenneth Branagh for his title role in Michael Grandage's Donmar West End production of Ivanov at the Wyndham Theatre.
The awards ceremony also covers a variety of other mediums including film, radio, television and popular music. Other winners last night include Hayley Westerner, Alan Carr, Al Pacino, Noel Edmunds and Michael Caine.
James McAvoy, who is due to return to the stage in 2009 in the West End revival of Three Days of Rain won the Variety Club Film Award.
If you want to catch up on all the news and gossip from the night, the ceremony is being televised on 30 November 2008 on Sky One.
