Billy Elliot in line for Broadway awards
Despite being a deeply British production, the Broadway transfer of Billy Elliot is a massive hit across the pond.
The show, already a firm favourite in the West End, has scooped an impressive array of nominations as American theatre (or theater if you're fond of erroneous transatlantic spellings) awards begin to name the great and the good of Broadway.
The Billy Elliot musical has been nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Production Of A Musical and the Outer Critics' Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Musical. The show's talented cast and crew have also been nominated for several awards.
Elton John, the musical's composer, is nominated for the Drama League Award for Distinguished Achievement In Musical Theatre. Cast member Haydn Gwynne is up for Best Featured Actress In A Musical and the three boys who play Billy are in line for a Special Achievement award.
Peter Darling has been nominated for Outstanding Choreographer, Ian MacNeil for set design, Nicky Gillibrand for costume and Rick Fisher for lighting.
Billy Elliot tells the heart-warming tale of a young man's ambition to become a ballet dancer in a working-class northern mining town suffering under Thatcherism.
The West End production of the show is currently playing at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
