The History of The Ambassadors
The Ambassadors Theatre is a Grade II listed building. First opened in 1913, the interior is intimate and small in comparison to most West End theaters. In 1996 the venue was bought out by the Ambassador Theatre Group, the largest operator of theatres in the West End, who renamed the venue, the New Ambassadors, and proclaimed it as a venue for brand new niche works and plays. However the theatre quickly reverted to the commercial West End productions as the niche works failed to engage interest.
The Ambassadors has been home to a range of award winning productions, from John Doyle's Sweeney Todd to the more recent Menier Chocolate Factory and Little Shop of Horrors. In April 2007, it was announced that Ambassadors Theatre Group had sold the venue to Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen (who owns the St Martin's Theatre next door). With immediate effect he renamed the venue The Ambassadors and plans to refurbish the theatre to it's former glory.
