Based on the 1890 German play, Frühlings Erwachen by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening is a daring new musical which examines budding teenage sexuality. From the matter of fact attitude of Melchior to the carefree promiscuity of Ilse, the show's characters embody the wildly varied and often clashing teenage attitudes to sex.
Set in 19th-century Germany, the show follows the sexual awakening of a group of teens. Oppression dogs the young and vibrant cast from all angles. The church, family and society all have their own strict attitudes towards sex and the stirrings deep within the youngsters compel them to break free and explore their exciting new urges.
Unfortunately, passion and youthful folly can be a destructive combination and the natural development of the teens is not always easy. Suicide, lies and lust banish the innocence of childhood and change their lives forever.
