The History of The Savoy Theatre
The original theatre on the site now occupied by the Savoy theatre was also known as the Savoy but the building was different. The initial theatre and the Savoy Hotel were financed by Richard D'Oyly Carte, who used the excess money he earned from showing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
The Savoy theatre was the first public building to have and use electric lights in London, and is situated on the only road in the UK that you are required by law, to drive on the right. This quirk was made legal to ensure that Savoy theatre goers could alight from their vehicles and walk straight in to the theatre.
