The History of Sadler's Wells Theatre

The Sadler's Wells theatre earned its name when a well was discovered in the grounds which had been built by Richard Sadler, a surveyor of highways in 1683. Richard Sadler owned the site of Sadler's Wells in the 1600's, using it as a 'musick house'. The venue was promoted to the general public through the apparent healing and healthy powers of the water from the well.

There has been a place of entertainment on the site for well over 300 years with the site undergoing a number of changes. The theatre was used to entertain with acts such as Scaglioni's troupe of performing dogs and two indian chiefs of the Catauba Nation who demonstrated war weaponry and dances! Sadler's Wells became a theatre in 1931.
