Sadler's Wells Theatre

Theatre Architecture

The Architecture of Sadler's Wells Theatre

The original design of the building was the work of designer Frank Matcham. Sadler's Wells was the first project to be part-financed by the National Lottery - the new building was completed in 1998. The theatre from the thirties was completely dismantled and replaced by an ultramodern house for dance and ballet.

The building was redesigned to accommodate the tastes of a modern audience, with a large accessible foyer, flexible auditorium and a glass facade. The building is airy and light, with sleek lines and gentle curves - the epitome of modern contemporary design. The entire auditory is produced as provocative theatre area. The building closely reflects the contemporary feel of the productions that currently performed here.
