The History of The Phoenix Theatre

The Phoenix Theatre opened in 1930 with the premier of Private Lives by Noël Coward. The first cast included Noël Coward himself, Gertrude Lawrence, Adrienne Allen and Laurence Olivier.

Since it's opening the theatre has had a very successful history. Even during the war the theatre wasn't dark, showing a range of plays including John Gielgud's Love for Love. In 1968 a new musical adaptation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales was staged and ran for 2000 performances. During the 1980s the Phoenix staged a number of award winning musicals as well as a season of Shakespeare plays.
The current production of Blood Brothers has been showing at the Phoenix since 1991 and is the theatre's longest running show.
