The History of The Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre was initially intended to be 'The Royal English Opera House' and opened as such in 1891 with a production of Ivanho. Richard D'Oyly Carte wanted the theatre as a sister to the Savoy which was known for lighter operas. However, the Opera House proved unsuccessful and was sold within a year to became a popular Variety House.

Musicals at the Palace Theatre include: No, No, Nanette!, Song of Norway, The Sound of Music ( 2,385 performances), Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar - 3,358 performances and Les Misérables which became the Palace's longest running production with 7,602 performances! In fact the Palace Theatre has a second claim to fame, as it was also the venue for Fred Astaire's final musical performance in the production Gay Divorce in 1933.
