The Palace Theatre was built by Richard D'Oyly Carte and was intended to be the home of English grand Opera, it's foundation stone was laid by his wife Helen in 1888 and can still be seen on the theatres facade. While the grand opera was not enough to sustain the theatre, it has been home to many long running musicals including Jesus Christ Superstar and was the venue for Fred Astaire's final stage musical Gay Divorce.
