Oliver! the musical is the timeless story of a well-meaning young orphan boy who stumbles into a life of crime in Victorian London. The story begins in the dank and dirty workhouse where we first meet the story's protagonist, Oliver Twist. The first scene then bursts into life when the whole ensemble rally together to belt out the rousing Food, Glorious Food. When the excitement dies down Oliver steadily plucks up enough courage to ask the imposing Mr Bumble for a second helping of gruel. It is then that calamity suddenly breaks loose! Oliver is banished from the workhouse for his insolence and sent to work for an undertaker. However, only when young Oliver escapes from the cruel clutches of this apprenticeship and runs into the tricky hands of the Artful Dodger and his gang, does the adventure really start hotting up for our spirited hero.
Whilst in London Oliver meets Nancy, the sassy heroine of the show. Caught up in the murky underbelly of the city, this streetwise young woman is trapped in a violent relationship with the barbarous Bill Sikes. Though Nancy takes to Oliver straight away, can she really shield the boy from the dangerous climate of their surroundings and the criminal lure of the gang?
Lionel Bart's spectacular conversion of Dickens' Oliver Twist first hit the London Stage in 1960. Instantly successful, the musical was turned into an Oscar-winning film just eight years later. Following countless triumphant revivals all over the globe, Oliver! will be back in the West End in 2008 thanks to the BBC's new Saturday night talent hunt I'd Do Anything. Hosted by the award winning presenter Graham Norton and judged by such theatrical luminaries as Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show aims to pick the main characters by public vote from a string of young hopefuls.
Oliver the Musical really is a cracker; a real rollercoaster narrative that twists and turns just as you think you know what's about to happen. Punctuated with huge dance routines and lavish show tunes, Oliver! is an experience that is not easily surpassed nor forgotten. So, if you want to catch one of the most hotly anticipated shows in history, book your Oliver the musical tickets from Show and Stay® today.
