The History of The Novello Theatre

The Novello theatre has undergone a number of changes and has operated under a variety of titles over the years. In 1909 the theatre was known as the Strand, in 1911 the Whitney and the Strand again in 1913. The name Novello was agreed in 2005 after a £3.5 million refurbishment - the title Novello was chosen for its reference to the great British actor Ivor Novello, who occupied the flat above the theatre for many years.

The productions over the years have included the black comedy, 'Arsenic and Old Lace' which ran for 1,337 performances to the longest running comedy in the UK, 'No Sex Please We're British' which finally completed its run at the Duchess theatre after 6,761 performances.

As with all West End theatres, a number of acting elite have graced the stage including Michael Crawford, Fred and Adele Astaire and David Jason. Currently the Novello is owned by Delfont Mackintosh Theatres Limited
