Tim Minchin’s scintillating music is faultless
The casting is pure gold, with vivid and heartfelt performances from all. Paul Kaye is suitably despicable as Matilda’s oily car-salesman father Mr Wormwood, perfectly complemented by Josie Walker’s brash ball-dancing Mrs Wormwood. The child cast is astonishingly good from start to finish — spirited, plucky and likeable without being too sickly sweet. Stealing the show, though, is Bertie Carvel as the grotesque hammer-throwing Miss Trunchbull, played with a marvellous mixture of menace, whimsy and caricature that brings to life Roald Dahl’s legendary villain. » Read the full review
