Help us to build the ultimate Valentine’s playlist

It’s not that long until Valentine’s Day, a day which can be either heart-meltingly romantic or quite depressing, depending on your point of view.

Happy couple

The loved up Valentine’s Day vibe tends to result in some strange behaviour. The pro-Valentiners might eagerly anticipate the arrival of their annual card avalanche and army of over-sized teddy bears. Some embark on a mission to their nearest town centre to find flawless red roses, candles and other romantic stuff. No matter what it is that they’re doing, hardcore pro-Valentiners spend a good portion of January and half of February looking misty-eyed and/or planning elaborate romantic gestures.

Over in the anti-Valentine’s camp, the mood can be very different. Valentine’s Day is dismissed as an elaborate scam perpetuated by machiavellian card companies. Phrases like “love is nothing more than a chemical illusion” get bandied around and everyone does their best to maintain an air of utter disinterest in romance. It can be a pretty gloomy camp.

What I’m trying to say is, Valentine’s Day is a bit of a divisive holiday. Some hate it, some love it and some are utterly indifferent (but they’re probably not reading this particular blog, given that it’s about Valentine’s Day). No matter what your stance on Valentine’s is, I guarantee that Valentine’s 2012 can be improved with the awesome power of showtunes.

This year we aim to improve your Valentine’s Day by providing the perfect Spotify playlists to complement your feelings on the holiday. We’re going to put together two playlists; one full of the sort of mega-romantic showtunes that will propel your loved-up evening into the soppy-stratosphere and another for those of us who think that love stinks.

We’ve got the first few tracks of each playlist, but we need your help to fill them out. Submit your favourite romantic or pointedly-non-romantic showtune/song that’s appeared in a musical in the comments section and help us to build the best Valentine’s Day playlists ever compiled.

  1. The Song The Goes Like This from Spamalot would be a pretty good anti-valentine’s song.

  2. And why isn’t ‘If you were Gay’ or ‘Fantasies Come True’ from Avenue Q in here for pro-Valentines…

    Or ‘There’s a Fine Fine Line’?…Great song
