Opera – to paraphrase Armando Ianucci – is just vowels. Subsidised, foreign vowels.
And following the news that a Dutch company has premiered the world’s first Klingon opera, that description has never been more apt.
Called u (which translates to ‘universe’ or ‘universal’), the piece is based on Tristan and Isolde, and features a Klingon story with Klingon lyrics sung by Klingons. u tells the story of Kahless the Unforgettable who is betrayed by his brother then witnesses his father’s brutal slaying.

Judith regretted not letting the pasty cool down first
As if that wasn’t enough, Kahless is also pitted against his bitter enemy the mighty tyrant Molor. To regain his honour he must travel into the underworld, create the first Bat’leth (Klingon sword of honour), be united with his true love the lady Lukara and fight many epic battles.

Combined with the fact that the English National Opera are going ahead with their astounding plans for a production based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith, it makes you wonder what attention-grabbing stunt the opera community will use next to try to attract new audiences.
Twitter – The Opera, perhaps? Something about Lady Gaga? Absolutely anything involving Doctor Who…
