Kevin Kennedy (Curly Watts) Joins We Will Rock You

When I hear that a soap star is joining the cast of a West End musical I generally assume that they’ll be from Hollyoaks. It’s a well-established career path: drama school, Asda, Hollyoaks, West End.
Is We Will Rock You ready for Kevin Kennedy?
However, the latest crossover from Soaptown into Theatreland is probably going to raise a few more smiles than an anonymous 20-something off Hollyoaks. Why? Because it’s Kevin Kennedy aka Coronation Street’s Curly Watts and he shall be playing Pop in the ever-popular We Will Rock You.
I’ve not watched much Corrie, (it reminds me of my shameful Northern roots) so I was forced to seek the opinion of an outsider, my Granny. She assures me and my “computer friends” that he’s just brilliant.
Not that I’m one to mistrust the opinion of a dear old lady, but I double-checked. Kennedy has already played Pop in a touring production of We Will Rock You, appeared in the West End production of Chicago and a done a turn in a touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Add to this 334 episodes of Coronation Street and the surprising fact that he was once in a band with Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke from The Smiths and Mr Kennedy seems considerably more qualified to tread the boards than most soap stars. He even had a single which made it into the UK singles chart (albeit at number 70).
I look forward to seeing how he does (as does my Granny).
I watched the tour of Rock You 9 times last year and Kevin never dissapointed as Pop. I think he is fabulous!
