Whoopi Goldberg Joins Sister Act Cast (YAY!)

Today is an exciting, if rather perplexing, day to be a musical theatre fan.
Just this afternoon we learned that the rumours are true and Whoopi Goldberg (my television mum) is joining the cast of Sister Act the musical at the London Palladium in August. Superb news, yes?
Well, maybe.
Whoopi, my beloved TV mum.
You see, the Whoopster has been cast as Mother Superior, not Sister Mary Clarence as you might automatically assume. Anyone who has seen either the film (which happens to be the second or third best film ever made) or the West End musical would know that Mother Superior is a pretty severe woman, even in her friendlier moments.
Can Whoopi – a woman so funky she can still pull off those tiny round sunglasses – really play Mother Superior? Will she deliver Here Within These Walls with the nostalgic melancholy of Sheila Hancock?
Can she really look disapprovingly on as Deloris gets funky without accidentally busting out some Whoopi moves? I literally have no idea but Ms Goldberg does have a knack of surprising people.
Even if this does turn out to be the worst bit of casting of 2010, who cares? It’s Whoopi Goldberg on the West End stage!
If you want to see Whoopi live, she’ll be back in the habit (see what I did there?) from 10 to 31 August. She won’t be performing on the 16th or 23rd so check your dates carefully. Book quickly; I’m considering re-mortgaging so I can book all of our remaining tickets so I can have Whoopi all to myself.

To any of you thinking about going, don’t think, just go. This is a brilliant production from start to finish. Maybe the scenery changes are as intriguing as the show- amazing
