The Florence Nightingale Museum documents the life of one of the most iconic figures in history.
A nurse, well-known for role in the Crimean War, Nightingale dedicated her life to others and was an avid campaigner for health reform.
The museum is in St Thomas’ Hospital where Nightingale founded the Nightingale Training School and Home for Nurses. It is divided into three sections, each telling the remarkable tale of this brave and courageous lady. The Gilded Cage focuses on her childhood, The Calling moves onto her involvement in the Crimean War and Reform and Inspire documents her campaigns for change.
There are a whole range of fascinating artifacts to see including Nightingale’s medicine chest and a register of nurses listing the women who worked under her in Turkey and the Crimea. The museum also offers audio tours and the best part about them is that you can listen to the commentary through specially designed stethoscopes – surely that is worth the trip alone.
