Wolfboy: Are We Excited?

The ever-popular Daniel Boys will join New Boy’s Gregg Lowe and Hollyoaks’ Paul Holowaty and Emma Rigby onstage in Wolfboy from July, but are we excited?

The plot certainly captures the imagination. Described as a “psycho-sexual musical thriller”, Wolfboy follows Bernie, a suicidal teenager who seems to have it all, and David, a former street kid who just might have wolf-like powers.

Wolfboy West End

Wolfboy seems to be rather heavy on naked male torsos.

The show went down well (with Lowe and Holowaty in the leading roles) at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival but will Lowe, a relative unknown, and a pair of Channel 4’s bright young things really be able to pull it off in the West End, even with the help of Daniel Boys?

Lowe and Holowaty reportedly did very well when Wolfboy was in Edinburgh so there’s nothing to suggest that they’d struggle to win over West End audiences. Emma Rigby won a British Soap Award for a heart-tugging anorexia storyline in 2008 and although I don’t consider that to be a glowing endorsement of her actual acting ability, I’m willing to wait and see.

Boys is always a safe bet, he’s well-liked, talented, and – rather refreshingly – hasn’t been in a low-quality soap opera.

Personally, I wouldn’t say that I’m excited about Wolfboy; more cautiously optimistic. What about you?

  1. I’m a big fan of Daniel Boys, but having seen this in Edinburgh last year, there isn’t enough ‘no’ in the world.

  2. Having seen this in Edinburgh last year I am extremely surprised that it transferred. I couldn’t be paid to see it again. I felt the story line was too dark and weird and the music sounded like they were making it up on the spot. The performances were all good but unless the show has dramatically changed, even the addition of Daniel Boys will not help this show.
This was the opinion of me and the 4 people that I saw the show with.

  3. In a word YES! My Daniel Boys fangirl status aside everything I’ve read about this show excites me, and my eyes shut, fingers in ears ‘la la la’ attitude to Hollyoaks means I can reserve judgement on the performances until I’ve actually seen the show…which won’t be long now EEK! x

  4. I saw the first preview last night and found it gripping, tense, and thought it was great. I’ll admit it’s not going to be for everyone (marmite) but it was definitely for me.

Apparenty there have been some changes since Edinburgh – having not seen it there I can’t offer a comparison – but I liked what I saw. The cast were fantastic and it definitely benefitted having the vocals of Daniel Boys in there, and great to see him act in a part away from type.

  5. Hope it isn’t a negative move for Daniel. His career is on the ascendency but having read some of the comments about the show – not sure it’s a good vehicle for him. Of course, I might be wrong………..
