Tony Awards Preview

The Tony Awards take place next Sunday and I will be your correspondent in New York City from the ceremony. In the meantime, let’s catch up with the UK representatives hoping to pick up a gong on the Great White Way…
Enron — no, it’s not done well out there (but then as Jonathan pointed out, that’s hardly surprising), but it’s still up for Best Original Score Written For The Theatre. Not seen it yet? It’s on at the Noel Coward Theatre until August — go, and make up your own mind.
The Menier Chocolate Factory — David Babani and his gang will be quietly hopeful of their chances of a win in the Best Musical Revival category, with La Cage Aux Folles and A Little Night Music both nominated. Wonder if Sweet Charity will follow in their predecessors’ footsteps next year?
Jude Law — he’s nominated for Best Actor in a Play for his interpretation of Hamlet, as seen at the Wyndham’s Theatre last summer.
Douglas Hodge — this is the one I really have my fingers crossed for. The 2009 Olivier Award winner is now nominated for the 2010 Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his superlative Zaza in La Cage Aux Folles. Bicker all you like about the relative merits of John Barrowman (who was also incredible in the role), Hodge’s performance is astounding.
Catherine Zeta-Jones — does she still count as one of ours? She’s nominated as Best Actress in a Musical for her part as Desiree in A Little Night Music, and will be hoping for better luck than her West End counterpart Hannah Waddingham, who missed out at the Oliviers.
Angela Lansbury — see above. The theatre and television legend is up for Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Mme Armfeldt.
The West End has also got nominees in the directorial categories — Michael Grandage, artistic director of the Donmar, and Terry Johnson, who helmed La Cage Aux Folles and is about to start directing Jeff Goldblum in the Old Vic’s production of The Prisoner of Second Avenue. Oh, and Alan Ayckbourn, whose play Bedroom Farce is currently running at the Duke of York’s before going on tour, will receive a Special Award for Lifetime Achievement.
So there’s plenty to look forward to, even if you’ve not been out to Broadway this season. Follow me on Twitter (@carriesparkle) if you want regular updates, or check back here all next week for the build-up and the results!
