Lyric Shaftesbury Theatre

Theatre Architecture

The Architecture of The Lyric Shaftesbury Theatre

Recognisable for its red brick facade the theatre is slightly lacking in grandeur but makes up for it in abundance with appeal. The building has a cosy, intimate feel and still retains many of its original features - although perhaps not as instantly attractive as other theatres in the area, the large windows and crafted features lend the Lyric an understated beauty.

Designed by architect C. J. Phillips in 1888, the Lyric is now registered as a Grade II listed building. The theatre remains much as it did originally, having been refurnished in the early 1930's to keep up with the influx of theatre-goers and the exterior respectfully restored in 1994.
