The History of Her Majesty's Theatre

The current theatre is the 4th to occupy this site. The first, called The Queen's Theatre, was built by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1705. The theatre changed it's name to The Kings Theatre in 1714 when King George I came to the throne, however in 1789 the theatre was destroyed by fire. The second theatre opened in 1791. It was here that Mozart's operas made their London debut. Between 1816 and 1818 John Nash and George Renton designed alterations to the auditorium and theatre facade.

When Queen Victoria's reign began the name of the theatre was changed to Her Majesty's Theatre, Italian Opera House . Sadly in 1867, the theatre was once again destroyed by fire. The theatre was rebuilt in 1869 and demolished in 1892 leaving just the Royal Opera Arcade.

The current, and fourth, theatre on this site was designed by C J Phipps and opened in 1897. The theatre built up a reputation for successful, long running productions.
