Hammersmith Apollo Theatre

Theatre History

The History of The Hammersmith Apollo Theatre

Opened to the public in 1932 and named the Gaumont Palace, the Hammersmith Apollo started life as a cinema only reverting to a theatre in more recent years. The building as with most in London has changed its purpose several times since opening but has always remained as an entertainment venue whether it be a cinema, theatre or concert venue.

Some of the biggest names in theatre and music have performed at the Hammersmith Apollo from The Beatles and The Bee Gees to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and most recently the global phenomenon that is High School Musical. The changes in use prompted different names and the building has been referred to over the years as The Gaumont Palace, Hammersmith Odeon, Labbatt's Apollo, Carling Hammersmith Apollo and as it is known today the Hammersmith Apollo.
