Theatre Architecture

The Architecture of The Gielgud Theatre

The Gielgud was designed by Walter Emden and CJ Phipps in a Louis XVI style and originally had seats on four levels. Over the years, seats have been removed and a gallery opened.

The Gielgud theatre underwent refurbishment in 1987, with extensive work on the gold leaf in the auditorium. The theatre is particularly notable for its beautiful circular Regency staircase and recognisable for its oval gallery and tower.
