The History of The Fortune Theatre

The Fortune theatre was the first theatre built in London after the first World War in 1924. It shares its name with the Elizabethan theatre that burned down in 1621, and the current Fortune theatre stands on the site of the Old Albion Tavern, a regular Elizabethan haunt for actors and playwrights.

The theatre was commissioned by author and playwright Laurence Cowen, and built by Ernest Schaufelberg. Cowens' play, Sinners! officially opened the theatre. Unfortunately for the playwright the production only lasted two weeks. During the years the theatre has been home to amateur dramatic productions and during the 30's was used by the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) to entertain the forces.

The theatre is now synonymous with the gripping thriller The Woman in Black which celebrated its 5000th performance at the Fortune in 2001. In 2005 the Ambassador Theatre Group bought the Fortune and currently operate the theatre alongside a further 9.
