Theatre Architecture

The Architecture of The Duchess Theatre

Designed by Ewen Barr and built in 1929 the Duchess Theatre is a relatively contemporary theatre particularly in design. Known to be one of the smallest proscenium arch theatres in London, the Duchess boasts excellent lines of sight with the Circle - which is narrower than the Stalls, supported by steel girders. This design feature for its time was unusual and remains one of the quirky elements to the building.

The Stalls at the Duchess Theatre were built below street level to overcome the problematic space and right to light issues which were becoming a common problem in London during the 1920's. The building remains nestled between shops on Catherine Street and blends perfectly, allowing natural light to reach buildings opposite the site.

The interior design scheme at the Duchess Theatre is thought to have been initiated under the supervision of the wife of J. B. Priestley, Mary Wyndham Lewis in 1934. The decor remains much the same as she had directed.
