The Architecture of The Comedy Theatre

The Comedy Theatre was designed by architect Thomas Verity with seating on four levels to accommodate 1,180 people. Today the seating arrangements have been adjusted and, though still on four floors, the theatres capacity has been reduced to 796.

Though it was originally intended to be lit by electricity, the Comedy Theatre was at first lit by a large gas 'sun burner' in the roof and was one of the first theatres to be opened under the new by-laws on precautions against fires.

The theatre has undergone many re-furbishments and re-decorations over the years, most notably in 1950 when the rear of the building was extended with new dressing rooms and stage doors.
