"The World belongs to you as much as it does the next man"
From the inspired duo who wrote such classics as Oklahoma! and The King and I, Carousel is one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best loved musicals. A subtle adaptation of Fenrec Molnar's 1909 play, Liliom, Carousel is a truly heart-breaking tale that artfully explores the enduring social issues of class, hypocrisy and domestic violence.
Set against the tempestuous backdrop of industrialising America Carousel is a stunning romantic fantasy. When a trusting young mill worker falls for a charismatic fairground barker named Billy she believes she will always be happy. Violence and jealousy mar the young lover's budding relationship but the naive and trusting Julie never stops loving Billy. When Julie falls pregnant Billy dies in a botched robbery while attempting to provide for his young family, given one chance to put things right by a heavenly gatekeeper, Billy returns to earth
A true classic from the golden age of the musical, Carousel is an emotional journey skillfully wrought by two of the greatest talents in theatrical history.
