Early Life

Susan Hill is an accomplished author having nurtured a passion for literature from a young age. Born in Scarborough in 1942 and educated at a convent and then a grammar school, Susan published her first novel in 1961 having completed the controversial story at just 15 years old!

Hill is renowned for her chilling tale Woman in Black that was adapted for the stage and has been running in the West End for over 18 years and remains popular with UK audiences. Her gothic writing style has awarded the novelist an army of dedicated fans and a cabinet of literary awards.


Happily married to Professor Stanley Wells a highly respected Shakespeare scholar and with three children, Susan Hill is a doting mother as well as the head of her own publishing house Long Barn Books.

Susan Hill has her own website and regularly contributes to an online BLOG although she does prefer to keep computers for office work and records and uses pen and paper to create any new novels. She continues to write and publish new stories, some of which have even ended up on Youtube!
