Current Role

Sir Trevor Nunn is currently directing the stage version of the Hollywood classic Gone with The Wind at The New London Theatre, Drury Lane. Still new to the West End, Gone With The Wind promises to be every bit as spectacular and lasting as the timeless 1939 film. Before this, Nunn was directing the much acclaimed stage version of Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage with Imogen Stubbs and Iain Glen at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry.

Early Life

Born in Ipswich in 1940, Nunn was first educated at the Northgate Grammar School before attending Downing College, Cambridge. It was here, at one of the oldest and most revered universities in the world, that Sir Trevor's passion for drama and the arts first started to seriously take hold. He had been acting and directing since his early teens, but a scholarship to Cambridge granted him access to some of the most celebrated young talent of his generation. From eminent Shakespearean actors such as Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen, to surrealist comics such as John Cleese, the entire campus must have buzzed with a kind of artistry unknown to Sir Trevor before then. After graduating he began his career at the Belgrade Theatre in Ipswich, but soon moved on to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1968 Nunn was given the prestigious honour of being made the company's youngest ever artistic director.

Sir Trevor ran the RSC until he retired from his post in 1986. During those 18 years Nunn has directed: Henry V, King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet,Three Sisters and Juno and the Paycock amongst others.

Career Highlights

Collaborating with John Caird, Nunn's production of Nicholas Nickleby picked up 5 Tony Awards. Sir Trevor also directed seminal musicals such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats and Les Miserables. The winner of many theatrical awards on both sides of the Atlantic, Nunn was knighted by the Queen in 2002 for his services to theatre.
