In 2008 David Ian is going to be involved in the casting of a new ITV1 drama series Britannia High. He recently starred in the popular TV show Grease is the Word as one of a panel of judges that chose Susan McFadden and Danny Bayne to star in the West End performance.

Early Life

David was born in Chadwell Heath, Greater London in 1961. It became clear very early on in David's life that he had a special talent for acting. After achieving a great deal of success as an actor, he moved on to become one of the most important men in the theatre industry and is now associated with some of the most profitable productions in the West End.

Career Highlights

The former actor, who turned to a theatre producer in 1991, was named "The most powerful man in UK theatre in 2005" by The Stage. As well as presiding over Grease is the Word, David was one of the judges in the BBC TV series How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?.

As a performer David starred in a number of UK theatre productions, at one point he even understudied for Cliff Richard. In 1990 David met Paul Nicholas while they were both starring in a production of The Pirates of Penzance at the London Palladium. The pair then went on to create the touring company, Paul Nicholas & David Ian Associates, and took a version of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta around the country.

Interesting Facts


David Ian met his wife Tracey, an actress, during the pantomime season of 1990. The couple live in Essex with their two children and often spend their summers in their 17th-century farmhouse in the Dordogne.

David Ian is a winner of The Stage 100 Award, the newspaper's guide to the 100 most influential people in UK theatre today.
