"Inside every one of us is a special talent waiting to get out. The trick is finding it"
Set during the 1984 Miner's Strike in northern England, Billy Elliot is the tale of a young boys struggle to change a communities prejudice. Billy sets out to prove that it doesn't matter what you do, or who you are, as long as you have passion and the will to succeed that's all that counts!
Billy Elliot is an eleven year old boy with a passion for dancing, in particular he admires the grace and poise of ballet much to the disgust of his family. His father in particular has his heart set on boxing as a career for his son - men in their home town are tough they become miners or fighters not ballet dancers.
Billy is determined to change the mind set of his father and the local community by becoming a professional male ballet dancer and ultimately making his father proud of him rather than embarrassed.
Interestingly in a case of fiction becoming reality, the boys that play the roles of Billy and his best friend were chosen from 3000 who auditioned to fulfill the dream of performing in the West End. The show has now proved so successful that a multi-discipline Billy Elliot school has opened, where young hopefuls can train in the arts and ultimately go on to perform in London's West End.
